How to try out Marlins tests for free

The new version of the Marlins test has many improved features enabling you to buy tests online, monitor your company’s test results, check that test certificates are valid,  and many more useful facilities.

The content of the test has been completely revised to ensure a fresh database of randomised questions.

If you would like to see how the Marlins test functions, please follow these guidelines:

  1. On the home page, click on ‘Taking a test’ then click on ‘taking a practice test’.
  2. This will give you access to an explanation and demonstration of the test, showing one example of each type of question that appears in the test.

We would appreciate your feedback on the new version: please take the time to fill in the evaluation form on the home page and email it back to Marlins.

If you would like further information on any aspect of the online test, please contact Marlins at info@marlins.co.uk

How to buy Marlins tests online

It is now possible to buy your Marlins English Language Tests online using a credit or debit card.

By purchasing online, you will have immediate access to your tests via an automated system that makes your tests available as soon as your payment has been processed successfully. You can therefore purchase your tests anywhere, any time, at your convenience.

This facility will greatly speed up the test buying process, removing delays due to invoicing and bank transfers, time differences, local holidays and weekday working hours.

We recognise that security may be a concern in online purchasing. When buying Marlins tests, your credit card payment details are protected with the highly secure payment facility, WorldPay which protects you against online fraud. For more information about WorldPay online security visit the WorldPay website at www.worldpay.com.

NB: Staff at Marlins do not have access to your credit card details as all payments for the tests are handled separately through the WorldPay site.

Purchasing tests on this website is straightforward and is the same as making any other online purchase. Please follow the guidelines below:

  1. Register your company on the top right corner of the Marlins Test site, if you are a first-time user. (This is a one-time process.)
  2. Enter the Marlins test site
  3. Click on ‘purchase tests’
  4. Enter the number of tests you wish to purchase for your company. This can be any number of tests: there is no minimum or maximum order. Then click ‘purchase tests’.
  5. You will receive confirmation of the number of tests you wish to buy and the value of your order. At this stage, you can change the quantity of tests if you want to.
  6. Clicking on ‘purchase tests’ will take you to the WorldPay secure payment site. Select the currency you wish to pay in (either US dollars or GB pounds sterling).
  7. Enter your card details and click ‘make payment’.
  8. You will receive an email from the Marlins website and a separate email from WorldPay to confirm the number of tests you have purchased.
  9. To check your purchase history, go back to the Marlins Administration site / Reporting and click on ‘purchase history’. You will be able to view all your online payments here. Marlins will also be able to view all clients’ purchase histories (but we will not have access to your credit card details).

How to allocate tests to your company’s Test Sites

Many companies purchase tests on behalf of their branch offices / crewing offices / manning agents / vessels. We have created a facility where the client who purchases tests can set up any number of test sites and allocate a specified number of tests to each test site.

A ‘test site’ is any place where English Language testing is carried out, whether at a shore-based crewing office or on board a ship.

The process for a Head Office registering a test site is a one-time process, however, test site details (including passwords) can be amended and updated at any time.

NB:
It is the client’s and Test Sites’ responsibility to ensure that sufficient tests are available for their testing needs. Marlins does not routinely monitor clients’ test accounts for this purpose.

For example:

  1. The headquarters of ‘XYZ Ship Management Company’ based in Cyprus has 5 crewing offices and uses 2 crewing agencies in different countries.
  2. The Training Manager of ‘XYZ Ship Management’ is based at the Cyprus branch and he wants all the company seafarers to be tested using the Marlins English Language Test.
  3. He registers ‘XYZ Ship Management Company’ details on the Marlins Test Site and buys 700 tests in a single order online, using a credit card.
  4. After payment, the tests are instantly available for allocation.
  5. The Training Manager at the Cyprus branch then sets up 7 test sites using the  ‘Test Site Administration’ facility. When registering a test site, he creates a password for each test site and he emails this password to each of his test sites. The test sites’ usernames will be the email addresses registered by the person purchasing the tests.
  6. After registering all 7 test sites, he then allocates 50 tests to each test site.
  7. He still has 350 tests remaining in his online account. He can check this by clicking on ‘Reporting / Test balance’ at any time.
  8. When the test sites need more tests, they contact the Training Manager and he allocates more tests to the test site from his account.
  9. When the company’s tests account is running low, the person responsible for purchasing tests places a repeat order, allocating tests to Test Sites, as before.
  10. The person purchasing the tests has full visibility of the results of all the tests used by each of his Test Sites and can create reports using the ‘Reporting’ facility.

If you have any queries relating to the use of the online test, please contact Marlins on: support@marlins.co.uk

How to test seafarers at your company’s Test Sites

This section applies to test sites (eg crewing offices, agencies or ships) that will tests candidates but will not purchase tests directly. In this case, tests will be paid for by the parent company / management office / a third party on behalf of the ‘test site’.

The person purchasing the tests needs to register each test site before testing can take place. (See: ‘How to allocate tests to your company’s Test Sites’.)

The person responsible for administering tests at the test site logs on to the Marlins Test Site. The username will be the email address which was registered by the person purchasing the tests. The password is also set by the person purchasing the tests.

The process of providing tests to seafarers is based upon a unique licence code provided to each candidate by a Test Site Administrator.

For example:

  1. One of the Crewing Offices of ‘XYZ Ship Management Company’ is based in Manila. Tests for each ‘XYZ’ crewing office have already been purchased by the Training Manager at the company headquarters in Cyprus.
  2. The Training Manager of XYZ in Cyprus has sent an email to the Manila crewing office confirming the username and password for logging on to the Marlins Test Site. He also confirms that he has allocated a batch of 50 tests to the Manila crewing office for the time being.
  3. The Test Administrator in Manila then logs on to the Marlins Test Site and goes to ‘Test Administration’
  4. She clicks on ‘Generate Licence Codes for Online Tests
  5. The screen confirms she has 50 tests available. She opts to generate 20 tests for testing seafarers this week. The remaining 30 tests will be available for use at any time.
  6. A list of 20 licence codes appears. Each licence code is 16 characters long, eg   6FE26177EEAD7012
  7. The Test Administrator decides to print out the 20 test codes for easy reference. She can also email the licence codes to other pcs.
  8. The Test Administrator knows how many seafarers are coming for an English test today so to save time later, she decides to enter each seafarer’s details now by clicking ‘allocate/amend’ next to each licence code.
  9. When the first seafarers arrive, they sit at 5 computers where the Marlins Test Site homepage is open.
  10. The Test Administrator checks each seafarer’s ID then gives each seafarer his unique licence code.
  11. The seafarers do not need to log on, they just click on ‘Taking A Test?’ then enter their licence code then click ‘take the test’. The Administrator checks that they each do this properly.
  12. If the Test Administrator has not previously entered a seafarer’s details, the seafarer will be prompted to enter his details before starting the test.
  13. The seafarer chooses the ‘help’ language of his choice and then clicks ‘start your test’. If he wants to practise before taking the test, he can click ‘start your practice test’ for an explanation and demonstration of the test content.

NB:

- Tests which have been allocated to a seafarer but not used can be allocated to a different seafarer by changing the candidate details. Go to ‘show incomplete tests’ and click ‘allocate / amend’. Change the candidate details and then click ‘update’.

- At any time, the Test Administrator can check how many codes she has generated and how many have been used by clicking on ‘show incomplete tests’.

  1. If no more tests are available for your Test Site, you need to contact the person purchasing tests on behalf of your Test Site and ask them to allocate more tests to you. (It is recommended to maintain a balance of tests in credit rather than to request tests when you have run out.)
  2. The Test Site Administrator has visibility of all the results of tests carried out at his / her Test Site and can create reports using the ‘Reporting’ facility. The person purchasing tests can view the results from all the company Test Sites.

If you have any queries relating to the use of the online test, please contact Marlins on: support@marlins.co.uk

How to purchase and take tests directly

In some cases, the company purchasing the tests is also the Test Site, ie the place where testing will be carried out.

In this case, follow this procedure:

  1. Follow the instructions for ‘How to buy Marlins tests online’.
  2. Register your own company as a Test Site (you may want to give responsibility for testing to another colleague: in this case, ensure the username and password are changed for your colleague to use).
  3. Follow the instructions for ‘How to test seafarers at a Test Site’.

If you have any queries relating to the use of the online test, please contact Marlins on: support@marlins.co.uk
